A quiet night inside a Texas home ended in unimaginable violence — a car tearing through a bedroom wall, killing a mother and her young son where they should have been safest.

Authorities say Gracie Yates, 18, has been charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide after the deadly crash in Stephenville, about 100 miles southwest of Dallas.

The victims were identified as Barbara Rocha, 49, and her 7-year-old son, Alex Aaron Rocha.

According to the Stephenville Police Department, the incident happened during the early morning hours on the 200 block of North Ollie Street. Investigators say the vehicle left the roadway and slammed directly into the home, crashing through the wall and into a bedroom where Barbara and Alex were inside.

The force of the impact turned a place of rest into a scene of chaos.

Family members say another child in the home witnessed the aftermath. Raul Rocha, Alex’s older brother, recounted what he was told.

“All I heard is a crash,” he said, describing his brother’s account. “I went in the room, and all you can hear is my little brother screaming and my mom praying.”

It’s a moment, he said, that won’t leave him.

Emergency responders rushed Barbara and Alex to a nearby hospital, but both died from their injuries.

Authorities allege Yates was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck the home. Police have not publicly confirmed whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. However, a GoFundMe organized by a family friend claimed a drunk driver was responsible — a detail that has not been verified by investigators.

Police tape off a crime scene, Saturday, July 6, 2024, on the 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Ky.

The crash has left the family not only grieving, but displaced. According to the fundraiser, Barbara’s husband is now without a home and struggling to cover funeral expenses while also trying to secure temporary housing.

Yates was booked into the Erath County Jail on Sunday. A judge set her bond at $14,500, and she was released on Tuesday, according to jail records.

The case now moves forward as a criminal investigation, but for the Rocha family, the loss is already permanent.
