A 20-year-old Kentucky woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she drove her Tesla straight into a crowd of pedestrians in downtown Lexington during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Kaydence Carpenter, of Frankfort, was arrested after surveillance footage allegedly captured her black Tesla Model 3 reversing calmly in a parking lot—before suddenly accelerating forward, mounting a curb, and plowing into a group of people around 2:20 a.m.

The video, obtained by local media, shows several pedestrians being struck and thrown onto the hood of the vehicle as it surged through the crowd. According to police, Carpenter then continued driving in the wrong direction down Short Street before officers quickly intervened and stopped her.

Authorities say four people were hit in the incident.

In an arrest citation, officers wrote that Carpenter’s actions “created substantial danger of death and/or serious physical injury” and demonstrated an “extreme indifference to the value of human life.”

When officers made contact with her, they reported clear signs of impairment, including bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, shifting emotional behavior, and the odor of alcohol.

A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up both a valid driver’s license and a fake ID.

Carpenter refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene, according to police, but later participated in field sobriety testing at the Fayette County Detention Center, where officers said she continued to show signs of impairment.

She now faces four counts of second-degree assault, as well as charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, driving under the influence, reckless driving, and additional alcohol-related violations.

Despite the severity of the allegations, Carpenter was released later that day after posting a $5,000 bond.

Her mugshot—showing her smiling—has only intensified the shock surrounding the case.
