A quiet Florida neighborhood has been left reeling after a brutal and seemingly random killing that investigators say unfolded in a matter of minutes—but has raised chilling questions about motive and mental state.
Authorities have charged 25-year-old Kersten Francilus with first-degree murder in the death of a woman in her 70s who was attacked while walking her dog in the Southwood neighborhood of Martin County. The disturbing details of the case, first reported by Law&Crime and expanded upon in local court coverage, paint a picture of sudden, extreme violence that shocked even seasoned investigators.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began with unusual behavior that initially didn’t appear dangerous. Residents reported that Francilus had been going door to door in the neighborhood asking about a “new bank”—despite the fact that no such business existed in the area.
Neighbors described him as calm but odd, prompting multiple 911 calls. What happened next escalated rapidly.
Shortly before 4 p.m., deputies say Francilus encountered the elderly woman as she walked her dog and launched a violent attack. Prosecutors later revealed in court that the victim was stabbed more than 16 times, suffering wounds to her upper body in what officials described as a “violent, violent homicide.”
Even more alarming, authorities say Francilus continued stabbing the woman as a responding deputy arrived on scene.
