A quiet Iowa neighborhood has been shaken by a deeply troubling case that investigators say began with a plan—and ended in a violent and heartbreaking death.
James Martin, 47, is facing a first-degree murder charge after authorities say he fatally stabbed his wife, Amber Martin, inside their Coralville home earlier this year. The case, detailed by Law&Crime and local news outlets, has drawn widespread attention not only for the brutality of the crime but also for the disturbing details that have emerged about what led up to it.
According to court documents, investigators believe the attack was not spontaneous. Instead, they allege Martin had been contemplating the act for hours before carrying it out. Detectives say he armed himself with a kitchen knife and ambushed his wife as she exited another room, stabbing her multiple times.

Police were called to the residence early in the morning on January 16 after reports of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found Amber Martin suffering from severe injuries. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the incident, additional details have surfaced that paint a chilling picture of the moments during the attack. Perhaps most haunting is the account from Martin’s own mother, who was reportedly inside the home at the time.
According to investigators, she had come to stay with her son after becoming concerned about his mental health. She reportedly fell asleep on the couch but later awoke to unsettling noises. Initially believing it might be noises from the couple’s cat, she soon realized something far more serious was happening when she heard “help, help me.”
Following the sound, she entered a darkened room and, according to her statement to police, witnessed her son attacking his wife. Authorities say she desperately pleaded with him to stop. After the attack ended, she was unable to locate her phone and asked him to call for help.
When police searched the home, they reportedly found a bloodied knife in the kitchen sink, along with signs of a violent struggle, including bloodstains and clothing linked to the incident.
Martin was taken into custody at the scene and, according to investigators, admitted to the killing. When questioned about his motive, authorities say he told them he believed he was “putting her out of her misery.” He also reportedly cited financial concerns, suggesting he felt their situation was beyond repair.

Those who knew Amber Martin say the explanation only deepens the tragedy. She worked as a medical laboratory scientist supervisor for the University of Iowa Health Care system and was remembered by colleagues as intelligent, kind, and dedicated to her work.
Her sudden death has left coworkers and loved ones grappling with shock and grief. “Sweet” and “full of life” are among the words used to describe her, highlighting the stark contrast between her life and the violent way it ended.
As the case moves forward, Martin remains in custody on a $1 million bond. Prosecutors will ultimately need to prove intent and premeditation, while the defense may focus on his mental state leading up to the attack.
For now, the case stands as a sobering reminder of how quickly domestic situations can escalate into tragedy—and how warning signs, even when noticed, don’t always prevent the unthinkable.
