A quiet Iowa neighborhood has been shaken by a deeply troubling case that investigators say began with a plan—and ended in a violent and heartbreaking death.

James Martin, 47, is facing a first-degree murder charge after authorities say he fatally stabbed his wife, Amber Martin, inside their Coralville home earlier this year. The case, detailed by Law&Crime and local news outlets, has drawn widespread attention not only for the brutality of the crime but also for the disturbing details that have emerged about what led up to it.

According to court documents, investigators believe the attack was not spontaneous. Instead, they allege Martin had been contemplating the act for hours before carrying it out. Detectives say he armed himself with a kitchen knife and ambushed his wife as she exited another room, stabbing her multiple times.

Police were called to the residence early in the morning on January 16 after reports of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found Amber Martin suffering from severe injuries. Despite emergency response efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

When questioned about his motive, authorities say he told them he believed he was “putting her out of her misery.” He also reportedly cited financial concerns, suggesting he felt their situation was beyond repair.

Those who knew Amber Martin say the explanation only deepens the tragedy. She worked as a medical laboratory scientist supervisor for the University of Iowa Health Care system and was remembered by colleagues as intelligent, kind, and dedicated to her work.

Her sudden death has left coworkers and loved ones grappling with shock and grief. “Sweet” and “full of life” are among the words used to describe her, highlighting the stark contrast between her life and the violent way it ended.

As the case moves forward, Martin remains in custody on a $1 million bond. Prosecutors will ultimately need to prove intent and premeditation, while the defense may focus on his mental state leading up to the attack.
