A tense encounter at a São Paulo hotel has drawn fresh scrutiny around celebrity boundaries and fan interactions, after singer Chappell Roan pushed back against claims that her security team frightened a child during a brief, unexpected moment.

The 28-year-old pop star, whose rapid rise to fame has come with increasing public attention, addressed the incident directly in a video shared to her Instagram Story on Sunday. In it, she firmly denied any involvement in the confrontation, saying the security guard at the center of the controversy was not part of her personal team.

“I’m just gonna tell my half of the story,” Roan said, describing an interaction she insists she did not witness firsthand. According to the singer, she was seated at breakfast in her hotel and was unaware of any situation unfolding nearby involving a mother and her child.

The claims originated from Brazilian soccer player Jorginho Frello, who said his 11-year-old stepdaughter was left shaken after a security guard allegedly approached her in an aggressive manner. The family had been staying at the same hotel as Roan during her trip to Brazil for Lollapalooza.

Frello alleged that the child had simply passed by Roan’s table and smiled at the singer — an interaction he said was misinterpreted by security as harassment. In a social media post, he described the confrontation as alarming, saying his stepdaughter was “extremely scared” and reduced to tears.

“Honestly, I don’t know in what world just passing by a table and looking… can be considered harassment,” Frello wrote, framing the moment as an overreaction that escalated unnecessarily.

Roan, however, made clear that she neither requested nor authorized any such intervention.

“No one came up to me. No one bothered me,” she said, emphasizing that she had no reason to involve security and did not perceive any threat. She also expressed sympathy for the family, acknowledging the distress caused by the incident.

“I’m sorry to the mother and child,” Roan said. “You did not deserve that.”

The singer added that she does not harbor negative feelings toward fans, including young ones, pushing back on any suggestion that she would view a simple interaction as harassment.

“I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children,” she said, calling the idea “crazy.”

Still, the situation has reignited a broader conversation about how celebrities navigate public and private spaces — particularly as Roan’s profile continues to grow following the breakout success of her 2023 album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

In recent months, Roan has been vocal about the need for personal boundaries, drawing a distinction between her public persona and her private life. In a prior statement, she explained that while performing or appearing at official events, she is “at work,” but outside of those contexts, she considers herself off the clock.

“I do not accept harassment of any kind,” she said in that earlier message, while also acknowledging the complicated dynamic between artists and fans in an era of constant visibility.

That tension has occasionally spilled into public view. Roan has previously called out photographers she described as “rude” and shared footage of herself confronting crowds, moments that have fueled debate about the expectations placed on rising stars.

The latest incident, though, adds another layer — one involving a third party and the unintended consequences of heightened security in shared spaces like hotels.

For Frello and his family, the experience was deeply upsetting, particularly given the child’s excitement at seeing a favorite artist in person. He noted that the encounter was purely coincidental, with the family staying at the same hotel by chance.

For Roan, the episode appears to underscore the loss of control that can come with fame — not just over one’s image, but over how others act in proximity to it.
