What began as an ordinary afternoon at a California park has turned into a deeply disturbing case that is leaving parents shaken and raising serious concerns about childcare safety.

Authorities say Suzanne Michelle Buhler, a 41-year-old nanny, is facing child abuse charges after witnesses reported seeing her repeatedly strike a toddler in her care—an incident that was partially captured on video.

According to details reported in coverage of the case, the incident unfolded on March 16 at Markham Ravine Park in Lincoln, California. Police were called after a witness—later identified as a landscaper working nearby—became alarmed by the sound of a young child crying and what he described as escalating aggression from an adult woman.

The landscaper began recording the encounter and contacted authorities. Concerned by what they had seen, witnesses reportedly followed Buhler back to a nearby residence to ensure police could locate her.

When officers arrived, they continued their investigation and ultimately arrested Buhler. Police said the 22-month-old girl had visible injuries consistent with the reported assault and was treated before being released back into her family’s care.

For the child’s parents, the situation has been both shocking and heartbreaking—especially given the level of trustthey had placed in Buhler.

The family told local media that Buhler had been hired through an online platform and had worked with them for several months. During that time, they believed she was helping their daughter develop in positive ways. The toddler had begun learning early skills like counting and reciting the alphabet, reinforcing the parents’ confidence in her caregiver.

But in hindsight, there were subtle warning signs.

The child’s mother later said she had begun noticing changes in behavior, including increased aggression—something that now raises troubling questions. At the time, however, there was no clear indication of abuse.

According to the parents, witnesses described Buhler becoming visibly angry after the toddler had an accident during potty training. The situation allegedly escalated quickly.

After viewing the recorded video, the child’s father described a deeply upsetting moment in which Buhler allegedly raised her hand and struck the child with force. He said seeing the footage was “a complete shock.”

Authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that protecting children is a top priority. Police are also urging anyone who may have previously used Buhler’s childcare services to come forward, as investigators work to determine whether there may have been other incidents.

Reports indicate that a prior 2023 incident involving a child injured while in Buhler’s care is also being re-examinedas part of the broader investigation.

Although Buhler was taken into custody, records show she was later released the same day. No further details about potential additional charges have been confirmed.

For the family, the focus now is on healing and coming to terms with what happened. What once seemed like a trusted relationship has turned into a source of pain and disbelief.

As highlighted in reporting on the case, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly trust can be broken—and how critical it is for parents and communities to remain vigilant when it comes to the safety of children.
