A Canadian family is searching for answers after a mother of four died suddenly following cosmetic surgery abroad—a tragedy that is now raising renewed concerns about the risks tied to medical tourism.
Jessika Chagnon Gailloux, 35, traveled from Quebec to Turkey earlier this month to undergo a tummy tuck and breast lift, procedures that are increasingly popular among patients seeking more affordable options overseas. According to reporting from People and other outlets, the surgeries were believed to have been completed successfully—but what happened next has left loved ones devastated.
Gailloux’s condition reportedly deteriorated within hours.

A close friend who accompanied her on the trip said Gailloux went into cardiorespiratory arrest roughly 12 hours after the operation. Despite attempts by medical staff to revive her, she could not be saved.
Authorities in Turkey have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Officials say they are examining her medical history as well as her activities in the days leading up to the procedure, including whether any substances may have played a role.
Some reports indicate that Gailloux and a friend had used drugs days before arriving in Turkey, though investigators have not confirmed whether that contributed to the outcome. An autopsy is underway, and her body has been transferred to a forensic facility as officials work to determine the exact cause of death.
For those who knew her, the loss has been both sudden and overwhelming.
Friends describe Gailloux as a devoted mother whose life revolved around her four children. A GoFundMe page created in her memory reflects the shock still rippling through her circle, with loved ones saying they are “still waiting for answers” about what went wrong.
Her mother also shared a deeply emotional message, expressing profound grief over the loss of her daughter and the void left behind.
Gailloux had even posted on social media shortly after arriving in Turkey, appearing excited about the trip—making the sudden turn of events all the more difficult for those close to her to process.

The case highlights the growing trend of traveling abroad for cosmetic procedures, which can offer lower costs but may come with added risks, including differences in medical standards, follow-up care, and oversight.
As the investigation continues, Gailloux’s family is left with unanswered questions—and four children are left grieving a mother whose life ended far from home.
