A Cincinnati family says a routine cosmetic surgery turned into a devastating medical emergency that has left a 47-year-old woman in hospice care.

Rachel Tussey, who documented her excitement about undergoing a tummy tuck on social media, is now receiving end-of-life care after complications following the procedure, according to reporting from WXIX.

In videos posted to TikTok before the surgery, Tussey appeared hopeful and optimistic about the decision. She shared that she had been thinking about the procedure for a long time and felt ready to move forward.

“I’m super pumped to do this,” she said in one video before the operation. “I’m only 47. I think I have a lot of life to live.”

Tussey also asked viewers for prayers and expressed some nerves before the surgery, acknowledging that undergoing any procedure carries risks.

Her last update came the morning of Feb. 25, shortly before the surgery was scheduled to begin.

Days later, however, her husband posted a heartbreaking update on the same account describing what he says happened after the operation.

According to WXIX, Jeremy Tussey said the surgeon initially told him the procedure had gone well and that he was leaving for the day. Jeremy said he could hear his wife asking for him in the background as she recovered.

Shortly afterward, nurses reportedly administered pain medication. Jeremy Tussey said a nurse told him Rachel had received dilaudid and fentanyl, medications sometimes used to manage severe pain.

But moments later, he said something seemed wrong.

Jeremy said he noticed his wife’s face losing color and tried repeatedly to wake her by calling her name, but she did not respond.

He said medical staff then began emergency measures.

According to his account, nurses started CPR and attempted to assist her breathing before administering Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

Emergency responders were called, and Rachel Tussey was transported by ambulance to Bethesda North Hospital.

Doctors later told Jeremy that his wife had reportedly gone about six minutes without oxygen, a period that can cause severe brain injury.

The family says Rachel Tussey was eventually removed from life support and transferred to hospice care, where she is now receiving comfort-focused treatment.

The heartbreaking turn has stunned loved ones who had been following Tussey’s upbeat posts leading up to the surgery.

Her son said the family is still trying to process what happened and focus on supporting her during this difficult time.

GoFundMe campaign has since been created to help the family cover medical costs and related expenses, with a goal of raising $22,000.

The family also says they have retained a lawyer as they seek answers about what led to the medical emergency.

WXIX reported that the doctor involved in the procedure has not been publicly identified because no lawsuit has been filed at this time, and attempts to obtain comment were unsuccessful.

For now, the Tussey family says they are focused on spending time together and navigating the painful reality of a procedure that began with hope—and ended in tragedy.
