An early-morning confrontation in South Memphis has left a 20-year-old woman facing attempted murder charges after police say a dispute over a romantic relationship escalated into gunfire.
Ateariny Boyd stands accused of two counts of attempted murder in the first degree and two counts of employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. She also faces a charge of vandalism causing between $2,500 and $10,000 in damage, along with a charge of violating bail.
The incident unfolded around 6 a.m. on Feb. 18 along Driver Street in Memphis.
According to a police report obtained by Memphis-based CBS affiliate WREG, officers responded to reports of a shooting and found two victims waiting at the scene.
The victims — a woman and her boyfriend — told law enforcement they had been inside the man’s home when they heard banging on the window and front door early that morning.
The female victim reported hearing a woman outside yelling at her boyfriend for having another woman inside the house.
During interviews with investigators, the homeowner said his ex-girlfriend had come to the residence and was upset that he was with someone else. He told police she banged on the front door before the situation escalated.
According to the report, the man said he then heard a gunshot. When he went outside, he allegedly saw his ex-girlfriend’s Volkswagen Jetta crashed into a wooden pole near the corner of Driver Street and Richmond Avenue.
Moments later, the boyfriend said he attempted to back his vehicle out of the driveway. That is when, according to police, Boyd allegedly parked her vehicle nearby, exited, and fired two shots before getting back into her Nissan and fleeing the scene.
Investigators recovered two bullet casings in front of the home, police said.
No serious physical injuries were reported, but the gunfire led to significant charges. The vandalism count is tied to property damage from the crash, which authorities say fell between $2,500 and $10,000.
Police later conducted a lineup, during which the male victim identified Boyd as the shooter, according to the report.
Boyd was arrested Wednesday and is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $310,000 bond, according to court records. She is scheduled to appear in court on March 13.
Two counts of attempted first-degree murder carry severe potential penalties under Tennessee law, particularly when combined with firearm enhancements.
Authorities have not released additional information about whether prior incidents were reported between Boyd and the male victim. The bail violation charge suggests she may have already been under court supervision at the time of the alleged shooting.
