A shockwave hit Washington’s political scene as Madison Sheahan, the No. 2 at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), turned in her resignation this week – and it’s not for a quiet retirement.
Sheahan is gunning for Congress in Ohio’s 9th District, a Democratic fortress that’s resisted change since the Reagan era! She made her intentions crystal clear on Thursday, dropping a show-stopping campaign video that flaunted her ICE credentials and down-home grit from her family’s horse farm.

This isn’t any old congressional seat. Ohio’s northwest, including blue-collar Toledo, has sent Democrat Marcy Kaptur to the House every election since 1982. Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in Congress, has survived plenty of political storms – but Sheahan thinks it’s time for a change. With Ohio swinging further right in recent years, the Cook Political Report now gives the race a ‘lean Republican’ rating for 2026, setting the stage for an epic showdown.
The Republican National Congressional Committee wasted no time backing Sheahan’s bid, confirming her run after Fox News first reported her departure from ICE Thursday morning. In her fiery announcement video, Sheahan didn’t pull punches: “In just under a year, I’ve stopped more illegal immigration than Marcy Kaptur has in 43 years on Capitol Hill,” she said, slamming the incumbent and DC’s culture of ‘hypocrisy, excuses and failure.’ On her farm, Sheahan declared, such nonsense would ‘mean bankruptcy.’
It’s not just talk. Sheahan brings serious conservative cred to the race, having worked as Kristi Noem’s political chief in South Dakota for four years before Noem herself got the nod as Homeland Security secretary last year. Sheahan also helmed the state’s GOP as its executive director from 2023 to 2024, racking up national experience she’s touting hard on her website.
Her site doesn’t mince words: ‘No Excuses. Let’s Get It Done.’ It pitches Sheahan as a powerhouse public servant and law enforcement leader, highlighting her ICE tenure where she claims to have hired a staggering 12,000 agents, resulting in 2.5 million deportations. She led, strategized, and executed federal priorities in border security and interior enforcement, according to her bio.

Marcy Kaptur isn’t going down without a fight. She narrowly thwarted GOP challenger Derek Merrin last November, eking out a win by just 2,382 votes in a district that’s given Donald Trump the edge in three consecutive presidential elections.
Will Sheahan’s outsider persona and law-and-order message finally topple Congress’ iron lady? Ohio’s Ninth is bracing for a political brawl – and this time, the Republicans think victory is within reach.
