A quiet afternoon in northwest Harris County turned surreal when a blazing object tore through the sky—and then straight through a family home.

On Saturday, March 21, a suspected meteorite crashed through the roof of Sherrie James’ house, punching through two stories before coming to rest inside her kitchen.

The impact left behind a jagged hole in the ceiling and visible damage throughout the home, evidence of the force behind what fell from above.

“When I saw the rock… the first thing that came to my mind was, it’s a meteor,” James said after the incident. The object, she noted, was unusually heavy and unlike anything she had seen before.

Hours earlier, witnesses across parts of the Houston area reported seeing a bright flash streak across the sky, followed by a loud boom that sounded like an explosion. Some described a green light, others a fireball—then silence.

Emergency crews responded to multiple calls but found no signs of a traditional explosion. Instead, the source appeared to be something far less ordinary.

Officials later confirmed that a fragment of a meteorite had fallen in the area. According to NASA, the object was part of a larger space rock traveling at roughly 35,000 miles per hour before it broke apart high above the ground.

The original fragment was estimated to be about three feet in size and weigh close to a ton before disintegrating in the atmosphere. As it shattered, it created a pressure wave—explaining the explosive sound heard across the region.

One of those fragments appears to have punched directly into James’ home.

“I saw a hole in the ceiling… and the impact on the floor,” she said. “It had to be coming down with force.”

Fire officials initially speculated the object might have fallen from an aircraft, but later concluded it was likely debris from the meteor that exploded over northern Houston.

Despite the dramatic impact, no injuries were reported.

For James, the experience remains difficult to process: a quiet home, an ordinary day—and then, without warning, something from space crashing through her roof.
