A decades-old murder mystery has taken a shocking turn — and it’s now drawing renewed attention to a man already linked to another chilling disappearance involving his own wife.

Authorities say Robert William McCaffrey Jr., 54, has been arrested and charged in connection with the 1990 abduction and murder of 27-year-old Lisa Marie McBride, a case that had remained unsolved for more than three decades. The arrest, first detailed in recent reporting, is being hailed as a major breakthrough driven by advances in DNA technology—but it also raises troubling questions about McCaffrey’s past.

According to investigators, McBride was last seen in the early morning hours of June 23, 1990, after returning home from a night out with friends in Vernon Township, New Jersey. She was reportedly seen entering her home just before 2 a.m.—and then she vanished.

Concern grew quickly when McBride failed to answer repeated phone calls later that morning. A worried co-worker alerted her family, and when her brother went to check on her, he discovered disturbing signs of a struggle. Authorities found a cut telephone line, damage to a window screen, and evidence that the home had been ransacked. Even the bed appeared stripped, suggesting something violent had taken place.

Despite an extensive investigation at the time, the case went cold.

Months later, in October 1990, a hunter made a grim discovery: skeletal remains in a wooded area within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The remains were later identified as McBride’s, and her death was ruled a homicide—but the limited forensic evidence left investigators without answers for years.

That changed decades later.

In 2022, authorities reopened the case and exhumed McBride’s remains for advanced testing. Using modern forensic techniques, investigators were able to identify McCaffrey as a suspect, with officials describing the DNA evidence as a critical breakthrough.

He was arrested in North Carolina by a multistate task force and now faces charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping, and burglary. He remains in custody awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

But what makes this case even more unsettling is McCaffrey’s previous connection to another disappearance—that of his own wife, Gayle McCaffrey, in 2012.

At the time, McCaffrey reported his wife missing, claiming she had left after an argument and had written a “farewell” letter suggesting she disappeared voluntarily. Investigators later determined that the letter was fabricated, and McCaffrey was convicted of obstruction of justice, serving a prison sentence before his release in 2023.

Gayle McCaffrey was eventually declared dead in 2018, but her body has never been found, and her case remains open.

For the family of Lisa Marie McBride, the arrest brings a long-awaited sense of movement in a case that had lingered for more than 30 years. One relative of McCaffrey’s missing wife described the evidence as “strong,” noting that DNA allegedly tied him to both the home and the victim.
