A devastating house fire in Indiana has left a family shattered and a community reeling, after authorities say the blaze was no accident — but a deliberate act that claimed three vulnerable lives.
Police have arrested Braydon Blake, who now faces multiple charges including murder and arson, after investigators say he intentionally set fire to a home in the early morning hours, trapping several occupants inside.
The tragedy unfolded shortly after 2:30 a.m. on January 18, when emergency crews responded to frantic 911 calls reporting a house fire with people still inside. When firefighters arrived at the property near Bloomington, they found the home fully engulfed in flames, with signs of chaos — including a vehicle that had crashed into the garage.
Inside the burning home were multiple residents, many of whom were especially vulnerable.

Authorities later confirmed that 74-year-old Mary Blake, the suspect’s grandmother, was among those killed. Also in the fire was 33-year-old Kristine Rowan, a woman who was bedridden due to cerebral palsy and unable to escape on her own.
A third victim, 53-year-old Paula Anderson, who served as a caregiver in the home, initially survived but suffered severe burn injuries. She later died weeks after the fire, adding to the heartbreaking toll.
Two others managed to escape the inferno, including an 18-year-old woman who sustained serious burns and was rushed to the hospital.
Authorities say witnesses quickly identified Braydon Blake as the person responsible for the fire. About an hour after the blaze began, deputies located him in a nearby wooded area, also suffering from burn injuries. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.
However, the case took another unexpected turn.

According to officials, deputies had been guarding Blake at the hospital for weeks — but he was unexpectedly released on April 1 without law enforcement being notified. It wasn’t until days later that authorities realized he was no longer in custody, prompting a search involving local police, state troopers, and U.S. Marshals.
He was eventually tracked down and arrested in Avon, Indiana, and is now being held without bond.
As first detailed in local reporting and law enforcement statements, investigators are still working to determine a clear motive for the attack, though early information suggests it may be linked to a prior allegation involving the suspect.
For the victims’ families, the loss is immeasurable.
Loved ones described Kristine Rowan as someone who had lived her life with courage despite her condition, while Mary Blake had reportedly been battling serious health issues, including cancer. The caregiver, Paula Anderson, was remembered as someone who dedicated her time to helping others.
In a statement shared by family members, they described the fire as a senseless act that destroyed not only lives, but an entire home filled with memories.
“In a matter of moments, everything was gone,” one relative said.
The case has shocked the community, not only because of the brutality of the act, but because of the vulnerability of the victims, who were unable to escape the flames.
As the investigation continues and the legal process unfolds, the focus now turns to justice for the victims — and ensuring accountability in a case that has left behind profound grief and unanswered questions.
