A chilling case out of Chicago is drawing national attention after police say an elderly woman was brutally killed inside her own home—allegedly at the hands of her own son.

Authorities say 88-year-old Daniest Graves, a woman described as deeply routine-driven and devoted to her family and faith, vanished under suspicious circumstances after returning home from a routine shopping trip. Days later, investigators would uncover a disturbing and grisly scene that led to the arrest of her son, 66-year-old Kevan Works, now charged with first-degree murder and concealing a death.

According to police, the tragic sequence began on March 26, when Graves returned to her home on Chicago’s South Lafayette Avenue after shopping with her sister. What happened next remained a mystery—until her sudden silence raised alarms.

Family members quickly noticed something was wrong. Graves, known for sending a daily early-morning prayer text, failed to send her usual message the next day. She also missed work, church services, and scheduled plans, behavior that was completely out of character. Concern grew rapidly.

By March 29, her sister went to check on her—but was met at the door by Works, who, according to prosecutors, appeared startled and refused to let her inside. That interaction prompted a call to police, setting off an investigation that would soon uncover a horrifying reality.

When officers first arrived, Works allegedly told them he hadn’t seen his mother and claimed she had gone to work. However, inconsistencies quickly emerged. Inside the home, investigators found Graves’ cellphone, contradicting his claims. Digital evidence later showed the phone had been used after she was supposedly gone.

As reported by local media citing police affidavits, the investigation deepened when witnesses came forward with alarming details. One individual told authorities that Works and another woman had traded Graves’ car for drugs, with two large garbage bags inside the vehicle at the time.

Still, the victim remained missing—until a breakthrough days later.

Armed with a search warrant, police returned to the home. With the help of cadaver dogs, they discovered Graves’ body hidden in the basement, concealed behind a bookcase in a secluded room. The discovery confirmed the worst fears.

Investigators say the scene contained disturbing evidence, including a blood-stained knife, a hammerbrass knuckles, and a bottle of bleach. Signs of attempted cleanup were evident, with dried bleach residue and air fresheners scattered throughout the home.

Further evidence suggested a calculated effort to cover up the crime. Graves’ purse and wallet were found discarded in the garage, while her jewelry boxes were emptied and relocated to the attic.

Perhaps most telling, Ring camera footage reportedly showed Graves entering her home on March 26—but never leaving again.

Works was taken into custody and is expected to appear in court later this month. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive, but the details uncovered so far paint a deeply troubling picture.

The case has left neighbors and loved ones stunned, as the tragic death of a vulnerable elderly woman—allegedly at the hands of someone she trusted most—continues to unfold in court.

As the investigation moves forward, the focus now shifts to justice for a life cut short under unthinkable circumstances.
