Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming trip to Australia is already stirring controversy—and insiders say it could quickly spiral into confusion and tension with the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to embark on a four-day visit across Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra, but unlike their previous royal tours, this trip is being described as something very different. According to reporting first highlighted by Page Six, the couple’s plans are being labeled a “faux-royal tour”—a move that is reportedly causing unease behind palace walls.

Despite stepping down as working royals in 2020, Harry and Meghan are still expected to use their royal titles during the visit, which has raised eyebrows given that Australia remains part of the Commonwealth under King Charles III.

Royal insiders say this could create mixed messaging.

“There will be confusion about what they are there for,” one royal expert noted, pointing out the blurred line between celebrity appearances and official royal duties. Without formal backing from Buckingham Palace, critics argue the couple risks appearing to represent the monarchy without authority.

The itinerary itself reflects that dual identity.

On one hand, Harry is scheduled to support causes close to his heart, including the Invictus Games and a mental health summit, where he will deliver a keynote speech. On the other, Meghan is expected to focus on business ventures, including meetings tied to her lifestyle brand, “As Ever,” which she has already begun expanding internationally.

Adding to the buzz is Meghan’s high-priced lifestyle event—a luxury “girls’ weekend” in Sydney, with tickets costing thousands of dollars per attendee. The event has drawn attention not only for its price tag but also for reports of ticketing issues, further fueling speculation about the trip’s organization.

The timing and location may also complicate matters.

Australia has long maintained ties to the British monarchy, but it has also experienced growing republican sentiment, with ongoing debates about whether to sever ties with the crown. Harry and Meghan’s visit—without official royal status—could amplify those tensions.

For Buckingham Palace, the situation is delicate.

While sources suggest there is little the royal family can do to stop the visit, there is reportedly frustration over how the couple continues to leverage their titles while operating independently.

The trip also comes with historical baggage.

During their last official tour of Australia in 2018, Meghan reportedly faced criticism behind the scenes, with accounts of tensions involving staff and the pressures of royal duties.

Now, years later, the couple returns under very different circumstances—no longer bound by royal protocol, but still closely tied to its image.

Whether the visit will succeed in promoting their causes—or deepen existing controversies—remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: all eyes will be on Harry and Meghan as they navigate this high-profile and potentially turbulent trip.
