A shocking murder case in Utah is unfolding with a dramatic twist—after a couple accused of working together to cover up a killing quickly turned on each other when questioned by police.

Authorities say a boyfriend and girlfriend are both in custody after the body of the woman’s husband was discovered dumped along a rural roadside, setting off an investigation that has revealed a tangled web of accusations and contradictions.

According to details first reported by local sources, Francisco Santos-Morales, 31, and Reina Chavez Sandobal, 41, were arrested after the victim’s body was found on March 26 near Brown’s Canyon Road in Summit County, Utah. Investigators quickly identified the man, which led them directly to Sandobal—his wife.

She was arrested days later, followed shortly by Santos-Morales.

But as soon as both were in custody, the case took a dramatic turn.

Each suspect began blaming the other for the killing.

According to police, Sandobal initially told investigators that she had confided in Santos-Morales about alleged abuse by her husband just one day before the killing. She claimed that her boyfriend then killed her husband the following day.

However, Santos-Morales gave a very different account.

He told investigators that it was Sandobal herself who delivered the fatal blow, allegedly striking her husband and causing his death.

Despite the conflicting stories, both suspects reportedly admitted to working together after the killing.

Police say Sandobal told them that she and Santos-Morales placed the victim’s body into a vehicle and drove it to a remote area, where they dumped it along the roadside. She also allegedly provided investigators with details about evidence left behind, including a hammer believed to be the murder weapon and a blood-soaked blanket inside her apartment.

An autopsy later confirmed the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head, and the death was officially ruled a homicide.

So far, however, neither suspect has been formally charged with murder.

Instead, both Santos-Morales and Sandobal are facing charges related to desecration of a dead body and obstruction of justice, as investigators continue to build their case.

The lack of immediate murder charges, combined with the dueling accusations, has added a layer of complexity to the investigation, leaving authorities to sort through conflicting accounts to determine exactly what happened.

The case has stunned the local community, not only because of the violent nature of the crime, but also due to the apparent betrayal and finger-pointing between the two suspects.

As the investigation continues, officials are working to piece together the timeline of events—and determine who was truly responsible for the fatal attack.

For now, one thing is clear: what began as a hidden crime quickly unraveled into a case marked by conflicting stories, disturbing evidence, and unanswered questions.
