What began as a minor parking mishap turned into a deadly confrontation that ended with a grandmother killed in front of her grandson.
A Missouri community is reeling after a 55-year-old grandmother was fatally shot while sitting in a car outside her home—an incident police say unfolded in seconds following a low-speed accident involving a neighbor’s vehicle.
According to details first reported by Law&Crime and local outlets, Shirley Johnson was sitting in a car with her grandson, Markel McCurry, on March 31 in St. Louis when the tragic sequence of events began. Authorities say McCurry had accidentally backed into a neighbor’s car, a seemingly minor incident that quickly escalated.
That neighbor, identified as 32-year-old Jamal Jones, allegedly responded with gunfire.
Police say Jones later admitted to opening fire on the vehicle, claiming he intended only to “intimidate” McCurry after the collision. But the situation turned deadly when a bullet struck Johnson, who was still seated inside the car.
McCurry, who had stepped out of the vehicle to address the situation, said he was attempting to apologize and offer to pay for the damage when he heard the gunshot.
Moments later, he made a horrifying discovery.
“I go look around and see blood coming from her body,” McCurry recalled in an emotional interview. “I’m in awe.”
Johnson was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The devastating loss has left McCurry grappling with grief—and guilt. He described his grandmother as his “best friend”, someone who played a central role in his life. In interviews, he shared how she would regularly text him to let him know she was cooking, small moments that now carry overwhelming weight.
“She meant everything to me,” he said, struggling to process the tragedy. “I don’t feel like I saved the day.”
Authorities say Jones made troubling statements following the shooting. According to court documents, he allegedly told investigators that he would have “rather shot [the grandson] than her,” underscoring the chaotic and volatile nature of the encounter.
Jones has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, along with additional charges including armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He is currently being held as the case moves through the court system, with a bond hearing scheduled.
Despite the severity of the charges, Jones’ defense attorney reportedly stated that he has no prior criminal history and may be experiencing memory issues, though those claims have yet to be fully examined in court.
For the family, however, the legal process offers little immediate comfort.
