A quiet Friday morning in Fort Myers, Florida, turned into a scene of horror after a brutal and seemingly random attack claimed the life of a local mother of two—leaving a community shaken and searching for answers.

Authorities say the violence unfolded just after 7:20 a.m. outside a Chevron gas station, where a 51-year-old woman was fatally assaulted in broad daylight. According to details first reported by the New York Post, the suspect—identified as 40-year-old Rolbert Joachin—allegedly used a hammer to repeatedly strike the victim, who had just exited the convenience store.

First responders arrived within minutes, but the woman was found unresponsive, lying in a pool of blood. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. Officials later confirmed she was a mother of two teenage daughters, intensifying the tragedy for those who knew her.

Witnesses described a chaotic and terrifying sequence of events. Prior to the attack, Joachin was reportedly seen pacing near the gas station while holding what appeared to be a mallet in one hand and a knife in the other. Surveillance footage later reviewed by investigators appeared to show him smashing the windshield of a nearby vehicle before turning his attention to the victim.

According to police, the woman did not appear to provoke the attack and was unarmed at the time. A witness told investigators that she had her arms at her sides when Joachin allegedly struck her, knocking her to the ground before continuing the assault.

The randomness of the violence has left many in the community deeply unsettled. No clear motive has been released by authorities, and investigators have not indicated whether the suspect had any prior connection to the victim.

Joachin was later located walking in the area and was taken into custody without incident. Officers reportedly recognized him from previous encounters, which helped lead to his swift arrest. Through an interpreter, he was read his rights and later confessed to the killing, according to court documents.

He now faces charges including second-degree murder and criminal mischief for property damage related to the smashed vehicle. He is currently being held in the Lee County Jail and is expected to appear in court soon.

Beyond the shocking nature of the crime itself, the case has also drawn attention to the suspect’s immigration history. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security stated that Joachin entered the United States in 2022 and had previously been issued a final order of removal. However, he had been allowed to remain in the country under Temporary Protected Status, which has since expired.

Federal immigration authorities have placed a detainer on Joachin and indicated that he will face deportation proceedings regardless of the outcome of his criminal case.

As the investigation continues, the focus for many remains on the victim—a woman described as a hardworking member of the community and a devoted mother. Flowers and tributes have begun appearing near the gas station, marking the spot where her life was suddenly and violently taken.

For residents of Fort Myers, the tragedy is a stark reminder of how quickly ordinary moments can turn into unimaginable loss—and how many questions can remain even after an arrest is made.
