A Walmart employee in Arkansas was killed while simply doing her job, in what police are calling a “random act of violence” that has left a community searching for answers.

Jordanne Drinkwater, 32, was working a late shift at a Walmart in Conway—about 30 miles north of Little Rock—when the unthinkable happened. According to authorities, a man entered the store armed with a weapon and fatally attacked her without warning.

As first detailed by local news outlets, police say the suspect, 37-year-old Zeddrick Ross, believed he was being followed by a “demon.” Acting on that delusion, investigators allege he armed himself first with a knife from a nearby store and then with a machete inside Walmart before encountering Drinkwater.

What followed unfolded in moments.

Officers responded around 11 p.m. to reports of a stabbing in progress. When they arrived, Ross was still armed. Police attempted to stop him—one officer discharged a firearm but missed, while another used a Taser to subdue him. Ross was taken into custody at the scene.

Drinkwater, however, could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the store.

According to the arrest affidavit, Ross later told investigators he believed Drinkwater was the “demon” he thought had been following him. He allegedly stabbed her in the shoulder and neck before realizing she was not who he believed.

By then, it was too late.

Police say there is no known connection between Ross and Drinkwater, reinforcing the deeply unsettling nature of the case. Authorities have indicated that, at this stage, there is no evidence suggesting the victim was specifically targeted.

“I hate to speculate, but it truly appears to be a random act of violence,” a police spokesperson said, underscoring the unpredictability of the attack.

For those who knew Drinkwater, the loss is difficult to comprehend.

Friends describe her as kind, uplifting, and someone who made a meaningful impact on the people around her. One friend said she “helped change lives,” noting her positive influence and compassion.

“She was just an amazing human being,” the friend shared. “She didn’t deserve this.”

The tragedy has also reignited concerns about safety in everyday public spaces—places like grocery stores and workplaces where people expect to feel secure.

Ross has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. He is expected to appear in court later this month.

As the legal process unfolds, the focus for many remains on remembering Drinkwater—not just as a victim, but as a person whose life was cut short while doing something as ordinary as working her shift.

A night that should have ended like any other instead became a devastating reminder of how quickly life can change.

And for one family, one workplace, and one community, the impact will be lasting.
