A moment meant for closure became a nightmare.

A young woman’s decision to return to her shared home one last time has ended in tragedy, after police say her boyfriend brutally attacked and killed her in a case that has left a community shaken.

Kennedi Oriti, 26, was in the process of moving out of a condo she shared with her boyfriend, Maurice Vanderhall, in Henderson, Nevada. According to authorities, she had already gathered her belongings and was preparing to leave for good—but made the fateful decision to go back inside briefly.

Her reason was simple: to say goodbye.

Instead, that final moment turned deadly.

As first reported by local outlets, Oriti re-entered the condo while a friend waited outside, helping her with the move. The friend later told police that Oriti wanted to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything and to have one last interaction with Vanderhall before leaving.

But when she didn’t come back out, concern quickly turned to panic.

Calls to her phone went unanswered.

Inside the condo, investigators say Vanderhall attacked Oriti with a knife, stabbing her approximately 20 times, primarily in the face and neck. When officers arrived at the scene following a 911 call, they found Oriti suffering from severe injuries and Vanderhall covered in blood.

She did not survive.

According to police, Vanderhall later admitted to the killing, telling officers plainly, “I killed my girlfriend.” Court records show that he has since pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a deadly weapon.

The violence didn’t end with the attack.

Authorities say Vanderhall also attempted to take his own life after the stabbing, injuring himself with a knife and attempting to hang himself inside the condo. Officers discovered multiple blood-covered knives at the scene, including a butcher knife believed to have been used in the attack.

The brutal nature of the crime has left loved ones searching for answers.

Oriti was just days away from her 27th birthday. Friends and family have described her as someone who had been growing, thriving, and building a life—making the sudden loss even more devastating.

“I have so many beautiful memories with Kennedi,” one friend wrote in a tribute. “I watched her grow so much… I was and am so proud of her.”

The case also highlights a chilling pattern seen in domestic violence situations—where moments of separation can become the most dangerous. What was intended as a peaceful exit and a final goodbye instead became the setting for a deadly confrontation.

For many, the detail that stands out most is how quickly everything changed.

One moment, Oriti was steps away from leaving a shared life behind. The next, she was caught in a violent attack that ended her life.

Vanderhall was arrested at the scene and remains in custody. His sentencing is scheduled for May, where he could face decades behind bars.
