A Texas mother is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say she subjected her 3-year-old son to months of unnecessary medical procedures in what investigators believe is a disturbing case of Munchausen by Proxy.
Kaitlyn Rose Laura, 30, has been charged with aggravated assault and causing serious bodily injury to a child, according to reports cited by CBS News. Investigators allege Laura falsely claimed her son suffered from severe medical conditions, leading to invasive treatments that were not medically required.
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn described the case in stark terms, accusing Laura of exploiting her child to gain sympathy. Authorities say the boy now bears physical scars from surgeries that medical professionals later determined were unnecessary.
According to a warrant from the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, Laura told doctors her son had cerebral palsy and could not walk or eat solid food. However, medical staff and even the child’s teacher reportedly observed that he was capable of both.
Despite those concerns, the child underwent significant medical interventions, including the placement of a feeding tube. Investigators say Laura persisted in seeking treatment across multiple hospitals, even after professionals began to question her claims.
The first report to Child Protective Services came in June, but authorities say the alleged abuse continued for months afterward. During that time, Laura allegedly removed the boy from school and continued pursuing medical procedures.
The situation escalated until Valentine’s Day, when authorities removed the child from Laura’s custody. That intervention triggered a deeper investigation, ultimately leading to her arrest.
Investigators also allege Laura created multiple fraudulent fundraising campaigns online, claiming her son was seriously ill. Authorities are now examining whether those efforts constitute additional crimes, including possible Medicaid fraud.
The case reflects a pattern commonly associated with Munchausen by Proxy, a rare form of abuse in which a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in a child to gain attention or sympathy. Officials say the long-term psychological and physical impact on the boy could be significant.
The investigation remains ongoing.
