A Florida woman who moved back into her estranged husband’s home in hopes of repairing their relationship is now facing arson charges after authorities say she set the house on fire following a heated argument.

Melissa Joann Dunham, 40, was arrested after a fire engulfed a home in the 4900 block of South Powell Point in Homosassa on Monday morning, according to local authorities.

Fire crews with the Citrus County Fire Rescue Department responded to the scene shortly before 10:30 a.m. and found the residence “heavily involved in fire.” It took about an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Investigators quickly determined the fire was not accidental.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, evidence at the scene indicated the fire had been intentionally set. When deputies arrived, they reportedly found Dunham sitting nearby with a bottle of lighter fluid — a detail that immediately drew suspicion.

The fire marked a dramatic end to what had been intended as a fresh start for the family.

Dunham had recently moved back into the home she once shared with her husband and their son, who had just turned 18 on March 17. According to the teen, his parents had been separated for some time, but Dunham returned in an effort to celebrate his milestone birthday together — and to try to “rekindle” the marriage.

Instead, tensions reignited almost immediately.

The couple resumed arguing soon after she moved back in, with disputes centering on Dunham’s frustration that her husband was too busy to spend time with her, according to statements given to police.

The situation became so volatile that their son decided to leave.

On the morning of the fire, he told investigators he moved out of the home because he no longer wanted to be caught in what he described as his parents’ “toxic” relationship, according to the affidavit.

The conflict had escalated even before the fire.

The night prior, Dunham allegedly used a hammer to punch several holes in the walls of the home — a sign, investigators said, of how quickly tensions had deteriorated.

Hours later, everything would go up in flames.

Dunham’s husband told deputies he was outside the home, sitting in his car and charging his phone, when he heard his wife shout, “now we don’t have s—.” Moments later, he saw the house on fire.

Authorities have not publicly detailed how the fire was started, but investigators say the evidence supports an intentional act.

Dunham was taken into custody later and interviewed by detectives. The contents of her statement have been redacted from publicly available documents.

She is currently being held at the Citrus County Jail without bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 13.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire.
