Three suspects — including a mother and father — are accused of abandoning a 4-month-old baby at the scene of a crime in Pennsylvania while fleeing from police after an attempted cable theft.

Authorities say the group was caught early Monday morning cutting an inactive Verizon cable along Meetinghouse Road in Upper Chichester, a township southwest of Philadelphia. Officers responding to the scene observed the suspects using a saw to dismantle the cable, a crime police say is often driven by the resale value of copper inside.

Lt. Christopher Jones of the Upper Chichester Police Department said the materials are frequently targeted because they can be melted down and sold.

When officers approached, the three suspects fled in a Jeep, leaving behind a second vehicle at the scene. Inside the abandoned sedan, police found cut cable wires and tools used in the alleged theft.

Then, something unexpected.

After towing the vehicle, officers conducting a routine check noticed movement in the backseat. A blanket appeared to shift slightly. When police pulled it back, they discovered a sleeping 4-month-old baby boy left inside the car.

“Thank goodness that officer looked in there and saw something moving,” Jones said, noting the child might have remained undiscovered for hours if not for the observation.

Authorities later arrested Angelina Williams, 32, the infant’s mother, in connection with the theft. Police said that at no point during her arrest did she mention that her child had been left behind in the vehicle.

Two other suspects remain at large: Joseph Daniels, 49, who police say is the child’s father, and Ray Gibase, 47. Investigators have not said how Gibase is connected to the couple.

The baby was not injured and has since been placed in the care of his grandmother, according to authorities.

Police are asking anyone with information about Daniels or Gibase to contact the Upper Chichester Police Department as the search continues.
