A chilling case out of Arizona is drawing national attention after prosecutors revealed new details about a wealthy California businessman accused of carrying out a calculated, long-distance killing of his estranged wife.

Michael Abatti, 63, now faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of his wife, Kerri Ann Abatti, 59—an incident that investigators say unfolded with alarming precision and planning. The case, first reported by local news outlets in December, and based on newly unsealed court documents, paints a disturbing picture of a man who allegedly used a cover story to carry out a deadly act hundreds of miles from home.

According to authorities, Abatti told family members he was heading out to go “hunting in the desert” on the day of the killing. But investigators say license plate reader data tells a very different story.

Records show Abatti’s truck traveling south through California before appearing hours later in Arizona—near the Pinetop home where his estranged wife had been living. Deputies were called to that residence later that evening, where they discovered Kerri Ann Abatti dead inside from a gunshot wound.

What makes the case even more unsettling is how the shooting allegedly occurred.

Investigators say there were no signs of forced entry and no weapon found inside the home. Instead, evidence suggests the fatal shot was fired from outside—through a window—using what authorities describe as a high-powered rifle. A K-9 unit later identified a scent roughly 30 yards away from the house, supporting the theory that the shooter never entered the home.

Family members inside the residence reported hearing a loud bang before discovering Kerri Ann bleeding in the dining room.

By the time law enforcement began piecing together the timeline, Abatti’s vehicle had already been tracked leaving Arizona and returning to California. Officials believe he made the several-hour journey specifically to carry out the shooting before quickly heading back—an alleged attempt to create distance from the crime.

The case took another dramatic turn when Abatti later called 911 and was treated by emergency responders after what authorities describe as an apparent suicide attempt. During that interaction, he reportedly made statements linking his actions to a situation involving his wife.

At the center of the case is a bitter divorce.

Court filings indicate the couple, married for decades, had separated in 2023 and were embroiled in ongoing legal disputes involving finances—reportedly including a trust valued at around $200 million. Kerri Ann had moved to Arizona, while Abatti remained in California, and the two were negotiating spousal support and asset division at the time of her death.

Investigators believe those tensions may have played a role, though prosecutors have not publicly detailed a full motive.

Abatti, a longtime figure in California’s agricultural industry, is now in custody as the case moves forward. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

For now, the allegations have stunned both communities connected to the couple, transforming what appeared to be a routine divorce into a case marked by calculated violence and tragic loss.

As more details emerge, the case continues to raise unsettling questions about premeditation, motive, and how a deadly act could allegedly be carried out across state lines under the guise of something as ordinary as a hunting trip.
