A Pennsylvania mother left her two young sons in the care of a trusted roommate for what should have been a routine errand. When she came back, police say, she walked into something far more disturbing — a scene that investigators now describe as a violent and deeply unsettling attack on her children.

Vira Zabudko, 40, was charged on March 27 with aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, and recklessly endangering another person after authorities say she turned on the very children she had been asked to watch.

According to Uniontown police, the mother had asked Zabudko to supervise her 5- and 11-year-old sons while she stepped out to move some belongings. But when she returned to the apartment, she was unable to get back inside. Police say Zabudko refused to let her in.

When the mother finally made it through the door, what she allegedly found was chaos.

Zabudko was attempting to force the 5-year-old boy out of a third-story window, pushing him through the screen, according to a criminal complaint cited by local reports. The situation quickly escalated into a physical struggle between the two women.

What followed, investigators say, only became more alarming.

During the confrontation, Zabudko allegedly told the child he needed to get into the shower “to wash the sins out because he is dirty.” Inside the bathroom, she is accused of trying to force both the mother and the young boy into the tub, holding their heads underwater in what police described as an attempted drowning.

The mother was ultimately able to break free, escaping the apartment with both of her sons. When officers located them shortly after, all three were soaking wet.

Despite the severity of the allegations, authorities said the children did not appear to have visible physical injuries. Still, Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele noted that the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges could be filed as more details emerge.

Police tape off a crime scene, Saturday, July 6, 2024, on the 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Ky.

Zabudko now faces multiple counts, including aggravated assault, two counts of unlawful restraint, two counts of recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault. She was taken into custody and booked into the Fayette County Jail before posting bond.

As part of her release conditions, she has been ordered to have no contact with the mother or her children.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 9 — a hearing that may begin to answer the central question still hanging over the case: what could have caused such a sudden and violent turn inside a home that, until that moment, had been considered safe.
