A Michigan woman managed to pull off a brazen escape from police custody—slipping out of a patrol car window while handcuffed, just feet from officers who didn’t notice until it was too late.

The incident unfolded on March 28 in Muskegon Heights, where an officer with the Muskegon Heights Police Department was on routine patrol when he spotted a suspicious vehicle parked outside an abandoned business.

According to police, one occupant briefly exited the vehicle before quickly getting back inside upon seeing the officer. That behavior prompted further investigation.

Authorities were able to identify the driver, but needed a fingerprint scanner to confirm the identity of the female passenger. During that process, officers discovered she had an outstanding parole violation warrant. She was taken into custody, handcuffed, and placed in the back seat of a patrol vehicle.

That’s where things unraveled.

While officers focused their attention on searching the suspect vehicle, the woman—still handcuffed—began maneuvering toward the partially open rear window of the patrol car.

Video captured at the scene shows her slowly leaning out of the window, extending one leg, then the other, before contorting her body enough to slip through the opening entirely.

Within seconds, she was free.

“Damn… this is live,” said the man filming the incident, identified as Robert Williams, who runs a local Facebook page. “They don’t even see… Look, look, look.”

In the footage, the woman drops to the ground and runs off, disappearing from view as officers remain unaware of what had just happened.

By the time police realized she was gone, she had already fled the area.

“While officers were searching the suspect vehicle, the female was able to squeeze through the partially open rear window, exit the patrol vehicle and flee the scene on foot,” Police Chief Maurice Sain said in a statement.

Officers immediately launched a search but were unable to locate her that day.

The escape raised immediate concerns—not only about the suspect’s actions, but about how it was possible for someone in handcuffs to slip out of a patrol car so easily, and so close to law enforcement.

Authorities later said they believed the same woman may have been involved in a breaking and entering incident at a nearby residence later that afternoon, suggesting her escape may have had immediate consequences.

Then, on the morning of March 31, police located her inside an abandoned residence. She was taken back into custody without incident and transported to jail, where she now faces multiple charges.
