The trip was supposed to last a day.

Two weeks later, there is still no sign of Yasmin Gonzalez Benitez — a 21-year-old mother who vanished after crossing into Mexico, leaving behind a four-year-old daughter and a growing list of unanswered questions.

Benitez was last seen on March 15 at her home in Santa Ana, where she told her roommate she was heading to Tijuana to visit family. According to police, she got into a car with relatives and left for what should have been a quick trip.

She never came back.

Days passed. Then a week. Then two.

The silence has only deepened concern for investigators, who say the young mother’s disappearance is wildly out of character. She had a routine — work, home, and caring for her daughter. She rarely left for more than a couple of days, and never without ensuring her child was accounted for.

This time, she left her daughter behind with a roommate.

Now, the child is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Detectives with the Santa Ana Police Department say their attempts to contact Benitez’s family have hit a wall. Her mother and brother, who may have been involved in the trip, have reportedly been uncooperative — a detail that has only intensified suspicion around the case.

One troubling claim suggests Benitez may have been taken to a facility in Mexico, though authorities have not been able to verify that information. Even basic details remain unclear, including whether she has a brother living in Tijuana at all.

Everything about the case feels unstable — shifting stories, missing confirmations, and a timeline that grows colder by the day.

Police say the circumstances are deeply concerning, not just because of the lack of contact, but because of who Benitez is.

A young mother who showed up.

A woman who built her life around her child.

Someone who, according to those who knew her, would never simply disappear.

And yet, that is exactly what has happened.

Now, investigators are asking for the public’s help, hoping that somewhere — on either side of the border — someone knows something.

Because for a four-year-old girl left waiting, the clock isn’t just ticking.

It’s echoing.
