A Pennsylvania nurse hired to care for a medically fragile toddler is now behind bars after authorities say home surveillance footage captured her allegedly assaulting the child she was entrusted to protect.
Cindy Desser, 58, of Bucks County, has been charged with endangering the welfare of children following an investigation by local police in Bensalem Township.
The case began when the parents of a 3-year-old girl—born prematurely with serious heart and lung conditions—grew concerned about the care their daughter was receiving. The family had hired Desser as a night nurse through a home health care service, trusting her reported decades of experience with children facing similar medical challenges.
According to investigators, that trust was shattered after the parents reviewed footage from cameras inside their home. The recordings allegedly show Desser smacking the child and handling her with force. In one of the most alarming allegations, the nurse is accused of pulling on the girl’s tracheostomy tube—a device critical to maintaining her airway.
The situation escalated further when the parents discovered footage of their daughter struggling to breathe after the tube became dislodged. Authorities say Desser was slow to respond, and could be heard blaming the child rather than immediately intervening.
The family told local media their suspicions were first raised when Desser, in an unexpected moment, showed them a video of herself allegedly assaulting another child. That revelation prompted them to examine their own surveillance system—leading to what they described as a nightmare unfolding in their own home.
The girl’s mother also reported noticing bruising, including marks that a physician suggested could resemble a thumbprint.
Police say Desser may have abused other children and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Investigators also confirmed that she was already under scrutiny in a separate case at the time the family made their discovery.

Desser was arrested on March 25 and is being held in Bucks County Jail after failing to post $2 million bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 7.
Despite the disturbing allegations, the child at the center of the case is recovering and, according to her parents, continues to show remarkable resilience.
