A California mother will spend more than 15 years in prison in a case that has horrified many and raised serious questions about child protection systems, after authorities say she allowed her young daughter to suffer unimaginable abuse before her death—and then failed to report it.

Samantha Johnson, 34, was sentenced to 15 years and eight months behind bars after pleading no contest to manslaughter and child abuse charges in the death of her 8-year-old daughter, Sophia Mason.
