The case, reported by local news outlets, centers on 36-year-old Jalynda Smith, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her son, Ja’Kaiden Smith. Investigators allege the young boy—who was autistic and nonverbal—was starved to death before his body was wrapped in blankets, placed inside a garbage bag, and discarded in the waters of Perdido Bay.
The grim discovery was made on February 6 when a passerby noticed a suspicious bag bobbing near the waterline along Lillian Highway and alerted authorities. When deputies arrived, they recovered the body of the child, launching an investigation that quickly turned toward his mother.
According to arrest documents, Ja’Kaiden was found in a severely malnourished condition, weighing just 20 pounds—far below what would be expected for a child his age. Officials described his body as emaciated, with visible bones and a lack of muscle mass, pointing to prolonged neglect or starvation.
The timeline leading up to the discovery has raised further alarm.
