A quiet Tennessee community is reeling after a domestic dispute allegedly turned deadly, leaving one woman dead and another facing multiple serious charges in a case that investigators say involved both violence and an attempted cover-up.

Authorities in Putnam County have charged Lora Morgan, 57, with first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of Samantha Goolsby. The disturbing case, first reported by local outlets, has shocked residents in and around Cookeville, a small city about 80 miles east of Nashville.

Argument turns fatal

According to investigators, the incident began as a domestic argument between the two women inside a home on Tuesday morning. While officials have not disclosed the nature of their relationship or what sparked the disagreement, court documents suggest tensions escalated quickly.

As Goolsby attempted to leave the home, authorities allege that Morgan shot her.

What followed, investigators say, was a series of actions that compounded the severity of the crime.

Body left, then moved

Police allege that after the shooting, Morgan did not immediately report the incident or seek help. Instead, the victim’s body remained inside the home for more than 24 hours.

At some point the following day, authorities say Morgan moved the body to a nearby field, attempting to conceal it among trees on private property. The effort, however, was only partially successful.

A local homeowner made the grim discovery when they found a body in a wooded area—described by investigators as “partially concealed in the wood line.” The homeowner quickly contacted authorities, setting off a chain of events that led to Morgan’s arrest.

Missing person report raises alarm

Earlier that same day, Goolsby’s family had reported her missing after she failed to return home the night before. The timeline of the missing persons report and the discovery of the body helped investigators connect the dots.

Deputies responding to the wooded property soon confirmed the identity of the victim and began piecing together what had occurred in the hours leading up to her death.

Confession and evidence

According to law enforcement, Morgan later confessed to the shooting during questioning. Authorities also allege she attempted to clean up the original crime scene, reportedly using wipes to remove evidence before moving the body.

She was taken into custody later that evening and is currently being held on a $820,000 bond.

Community shaken

The case has left many in Cookeville stunned. Violent crimes of this nature are rare in the area, and the details surrounding the alleged concealment of the body have only deepened the sense of unease.

Investigators have not released additional information about the relationship between Morgan and Goolsby, citing the ongoing nature of the case. However, officials have confirmed that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute, a category of crime that often carries heightened emotional intensity.

What comes next

Morgan is expected to appear in court in April as the legal process begins to unfold. Prosecutors will likely present further evidence as they build their case, including details surrounding the alleged confession and actions taken after the shooting.

As the investigation continues, the case serves as another stark reminder of how quickly domestic conflicts can escalate—and the devastating consequences that can follow.
