A routine shopping trip turned into a disturbing scene of violence at a Florida Walmart, after police say a dispute over a checkout line escalated into an alleged assault on a 79-year-old woman.
Keri Estep, 34, is now facing a charge of battery against a person over the age of 65, following the January incident inside a Sunrise, Florida store. The case, which has gained renewed attention after being detailed in a Law&Crime report and local coverage, highlights how quickly everyday tensions can spiral into something far more serious.
What started the confrontation
According to police, the altercation began when Estep accused the elderly woman of cutting in line at a customer service area. The older woman, whose name has not been released, denied the accusation, reportedly telling Estep there were two separate lines.
Witnesses say the disagreement quickly became heated.
A store security guard told investigators he stepped in when it appeared the argument might turn physical. Estep allegedly claimed the older woman had hit her shopping cart, which contained her baby — a claim the victim strongly denied.

Despite the guard’s attempt to de-escalate the situation, authorities say Estep managed to get around him.
Alleged attack caught on camera
According to police reports and body-camera footage, Estep then struck the elderly woman and kicked her, hitting her in the side. The victim later told officers she had been called an “old lady” and was told she “deserved it.”
“She reached out and kicked me,” the woman said in footage reviewed by investigators.
While the victim declined medical treatment at the scene, she told officers she wanted to press charges.
Conflicting accounts
When questioned by police, Estep initially claimed she acted out of concern for her child’s safety, saying she believed the older woman had behaved aggressively.
However, investigators said store surveillance video did not support her version of events. After being confronted with the footage, Estep reportedly acknowledged that her account was inaccurate.

Authorities say the evidence aligned more closely with the victim’s description — that the incident stemmed from a dispute over line placement rather than any physical threat.
Legal consequences
Estep was arrested and charged with battery on a person over 65, a more serious offense under Florida law due to the victim’s age. She was later released from custody after posting $2,500 bail.
Her next court appearance has not yet been publicly detailed.
A broader reminder
While the physical injuries in this case may have been limited, the incident has drawn attention to the growing frequency of public confrontations escalating into violence, particularly in high-stress environments like busy retail stores.
Experts often point to factors such as crowding, impatience, and heightened emotions as contributors to these types of incidents — but cases involving elderly victims tend to spark particular concern.
For the victim in this case, what began as a simple disagreement over a checkout line ended in an alleged assault — a reminder that even minor disputes can have serious consequences when tempers boil over.
As the case moves through the legal system, it serves as a stark example of how quickly everyday interactions can take a troubling turn.
