A quiet mountain community in North Carolina has been shaken by an unthinkable tragedy after authorities say a mother fatally stabbed her infant son before allegedly turning her attention on another victim.

According to investigators, Ciara Frederick, 34, is facing first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges following the death of her 10-month-old son, Enoch Chappell. The disturbing case, first detailed in local reporting, unfolded in Barnardsville—a small, rural area about 20 miles north of Asheville.

A shocking scene

Deputies and emergency responders were called to a home on Rocala Drive shortly after 2 p.m., where they found the baby suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts by first responders to save him, the infant was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.

Authorities say the injuries were severe, and the loss has left even seasoned responders shaken.

“Our hearts are broken,” Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller said in a statement, noting that emergency personnel did everything they could to save the child.

Allegations of a second attack

The situation became even more alarming as investigators pieced together what happened in the moments surrounding the fatal stabbing.

According to an arrest warrant, Frederick is also accused of chasing a man down the home’s driveway while armed with a fixed-blade knife. Officials have not released details about the man’s identity or whether he sustained any injuries, but the alleged pursuit underscores the chaotic and violent nature of the incident.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive, and it remains unclear what led up to the attack.

Arrest and charges

Frederick was taken into custody shortly after the incident and booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility. Officials say she is being held without bond, reflecting the seriousness of the charges.

She made an initial court appearance following her arrest and is expected to return to court in mid-April as the case proceeds.

Community in shock

Barnardsville, known for its quiet, close-knit atmosphere, is now grappling with the aftermath of a crime that has left many searching for answers.

While details remain limited, the case has sparked renewed concern about domestic crises that escalate into violence—particularly when young children are involved. Neighbors and community members are left trying to process how such a tragedy could unfold in their area.

Ongoing investigation

Law enforcement officials say the investigation is still active, and additional details may emerge as they continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews.

For now, the focus remains on understanding what led to the child’s death and ensuring accountability through the legal process.

As the case moves forward, it stands as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly situations can spiral—and how the most vulnerable can be caught in the middle.
