A deeply disturbing case out of Indiana is drawing national attention after authorities say a vulnerable 4-year-old boy with severe disabilities was allegedly confined to a basement closet for extended periods before his death.

The child, identified as Malichi Lovely, was found unresponsive inside the home earlier this week, prompting an urgent investigation that has since led to criminal charges against his mother, Angel Lovely, 37, and her boyfriend, Nicholas Bergdoll, 36. Both are now facing felony charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, according to court records.

The case, first reported by local outlets, has shocked many due to the conditions described by investigators and the child’s extreme vulnerability.

A tragic discovery

Police responded to the family’s home in Indianapolis after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. When first responders arrived, they found the boy’s mother attempting CPR. Malichi was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities say the exact cause of death is still pending, but the circumstances surrounding where and how the child was found have raised serious concerns.

According to court documents, Malichi was discovered in a cluttered basement closet, an area reportedly filled with stored items. Investigators allege that the child was frequently kept and made to sleep in that space.

“Trapped in the little room”

Perhaps the most heartbreaking details came from the boy’s siblings, who told investigators that their brother was often confined to what they described as “the little room.”

One child reportedly said, “He is trapped in the little room,” adding that their mother would keep him there and “not pay attention to him.”

Malichi had significant medical needs. He suffered from conditions including cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, and was unable to walk, speak, or care for himself. According to authorities, he required constant attention and care.

Warning signs and missed intervention

Investigators say the child had previously shown signs of neglect. Records indicate he had been underweight and malnourished, and at one point in 2024, he was temporarily removed from his mother’s care over concerns of medical neglect before later being returned.

On the night before his death, police say Malichi was placed in the closet. One sibling reportedly heard gagging noises coming from the space the next morning before leaving for school. Hours later, another child returned home, opened the closet, and found Malichi unresponsive, with blood visible around his mouth.

Parents’ responses

According to court documents, the boy’s mother admitted she would sometimes place him in the closet when he wouldn’t stop crying, saying she needed a moment to “breathe.”

Bergdoll, who had been in a relationship with the mother for only a few months, allegedly told investigators he did not intervene, stating he did not feel it was his place to tell her how to raise her children.

What comes next

Both defendants are currently being held in jail as they await their next court appearance. Prosecutors are expected to present further evidence as the case moves forward.

The tragedy has sparked outrage and renewed conversations about how vulnerable children—especially those with severe disabilities—are protected within the system.

As the investigation continues, many are left grappling with how such a situation could unfold—and whether more could have been done to prevent it.
