A tragic case out of Alabama is drawing national attention after a mother pleaded not guilty to serious charges tied to the death of her teenage son — a case that authorities say involves disturbing allegations of neglect and abandonment.

Amanda Marie Morgan, a mother from Theodore, Alabama, is now facing felony murder and aggravated child abuse charges following the death of her 14-year-old son, who had severe autism. According to investigators, the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death paint a troubling picture of what authorities describe as prolonged neglect inside the family home.

As first detailed in regional reporting by FOX10 and later updated, Morgan formally entered a not guilty plea this week. She is expected to return to court in April for a preliminary hearing as the case continues to unfold.

What investigators say happened

Authorities allege that Morgan left her two children — both diagnosed with autism — home alone overnight. During that time, prosecutors say, the 14-year-old boy became entangled in a blanket and died from strangulation.

When officers arrived at the home, they found not only the deceased child, but also his 16-year-old sister in critical condition. She was later transported to a hospital, where officials determined she was suffering from malnutrition, raising further concerns about the children’s living conditions.

The case did not emerge overnight. Police began investigating back in October 2025 after responding to a call at the family’s residence. What they discovered inside, according to authorities, was deeply alarming.

Conditions inside the home

Investigators described the home as being in extreme disrepair and unsanitary condition. Reports indicate that there was feces on walls and throughout the residence, along with a lack of basic utilities such as running water and air conditioning. The home was also reportedly infested with bugs.

These details have become central to the prosecution’s case, as they attempt to establish a pattern of neglect leading up to the boy’s death.

Charges and legal proceedings

Following a months-long investigation — which included waiting for autopsy and toxicology results — prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence to move forward with charges.

Morgan is currently being held on a $400,000 bond for the felony murder charge and an additional $40,000 bond for aggravated child abuse. If released, she would be placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring and barred from contacting her surviving daughter.

Legal experts say the felony murder charge could hinge on whether prosecutors can prove that the alleged neglect directly contributed to the boy’s death, even if it was not intentional.

A case raising broader questions

The heartbreaking details of this case — particularly involving children with special needs — have sparked wider conversations about caregiver responsibility, access to support systems, and how warning signs may go unnoticed.

While Morgan has pleaded not guilty, the case remains under intense scrutiny as it moves through the court system.

The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of children who rely heavily on caregivers — and the devastating consequences that can follow when that care is called into question.
