A stretch of desert highway in Congress, Arizona became the site of a devastating chain of events — a violent collision, a fireball of twisted metal, and a tragedy that claimed three lives and shattered a family.

Authorities say Amy Lynn Mickelson, 48, crossed the center line of U.S. 93 on the afternoon of Dec. 7, 2024, and slammed head-on into a Toyota Sienna minivan carrying a group of passengers. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Mickelson was allegedly impaired at the time of the crash, though officials have not specified the substance involved.

The impact was catastrophic.

Witnesses described a chaotic and harrowing scene as flames quickly consumed Mickelson’s BMW. One bystander rushed to the minivan to help its occupants, while another pulled Mickelson from the wreckage moments before her vehicle was engulfed in fire. Thick smoke rose into the sky as emergency responders raced to the scene.

Inside the minivan, the damage was irreversible.

Three occupants — a 51-year-old driver and two passengers, ages 44 and 17 — were pronounced dead at the scene. Four surviving children, ranging in age from 5 to 16, were transported to hospitals with serious injuries. Authorities later said they were expected to survive, but the emotional toll of the crash is immeasurable.

Investigators determined that Mickelson caused the collision. But in the aftermath, she disappeared.

Police lights activated on an Evansville Police Department vehicle.

According to officials, she fled Arizona and established residence in Utah, setting off a multi-state search. For more than a year, the case festered — until March 19, 2026, when law enforcement, working with the U.S. Marshals Service, located and arrested her outside a convenience store in Salt Lake City.

Mickelson now faces a sweeping list of charges: three counts of second-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated assault, two counts of felony endangerment, criminal damage, and aggravated DUI. She has been extradited back to Arizona, where she awaits prosecution.
