A heartbreaking tragedy in Texas has ended with a devastating sentence, after a babysitter was found responsible for the deaths of two 1-year-old twins left unattended in a bathtub.

Joan Reyes de Jesus, 34, has been sentenced to two life terms in prison after being convicted of murder in connection with the drowning deaths of the infants. The case, which drew widespread attention after being detailed in regional coverage and later highlighted by Law&Crime, has left a community grappling with how a routine act of childcare turned fatal.

What happened inside the home

According to investigators, the incident occurred in October 2024 at a home in Odessa, Texas, where de Jesus had been hired specifically to care for the twins. Authorities say she placed the children in a bathtub, turned on the water, and then left the bathroom to watch television.

At some point afterward, she allegedly fell asleep, leaving the infants alone in the tub.

Prosecutors said at trial that at least 30 minutes or more passed before anyone realized the children were still in the bathroom. By the time emergency responders arrived, the twins were found unresponsive and suffering from apparent drowning.

Despite being rushed to a hospital, both children were later pronounced dead.

A small detail with devastating consequences

One of the most chilling aspects of the case centers on what may have caused the bathtub to fill with water.

De Jesus reportedly told investigators that she did not plug the drain, which would normally prevent water from accumulating to dangerous levels. However, she claimed that a scrunchie — a fabric hair tie — had blocked the drain, allowing the tub to fill as water continued running.

That small, seemingly accidental obstruction may have contributed to the fatal outcome, though prosecutors emphasized that the core issue was not the drain — but the fact that the children were left completely unattended.

“They couldn’t walk. They couldn’t even cry out for help,” prosecutors argued, underscoring the vulnerability of the infants.

Reaction during and after the incident

Testimony during the trial revealed that de Jesus appeared unemotional and unresponsive when the children were discovered, allegedly making no attempt to assist them.

The case also shed light on the broader circumstances surrounding the household. Reports indicate the twins’ mother had relied heavily on de Jesus for childcare — allegedly leaving the children in her care the majority of the time while she worked or engaged in other activities. The mother has since faced separate legal issues related to drug charges.

Legal outcome

After hearing the evidence, a jury found de Jesus guilty on two counts of murder. She was sentenced to life in prison for each child, with the possibility of parole after 35 years.

Legal experts say the severity of the sentence reflects the level of responsibility placed on caregivers — particularly when caring for infants who are entirely dependent on adults for their safety.

A tragedy that resonates

The case has sparked renewed conversations about child supervision, caregiver accountability, and preventable accidents in the home. While the blocked drain may have played a role, authorities stress that the tragedy ultimately came down to a simple but critical failure: leaving vulnerable children alone in a dangerous situation.

For many, the loss of the twins is a painful reminder of how quickly everyday moments can turn into irreversible tragedy — and how essential constant supervision is when young lives are at stake.
