What was supposed to be a routine custody exchange outside a Texas YMCA turned into a violent and carefully orchestrated attack, leaving a father seriously injured and two people facing felony charges.
According to details reported in the case, Oscar Javier Barbosa, 32, arrived at a YMCA in San Antonio on the evening of Feb. 19 to pick up his children—something he had likely done many times before. But this time, investigators say, the meeting had been set up as a trap.
Police allege that Barbosa’s ex-girlfriend, Melanie Sierra Gomez, 31, played a key role in luring him into a vulnerable position. Court documents indicate that Gomez directed Barbosa through a series of instructions—first telling him to go inside the building to get the children, then asking him to come back outside.
That’s when things escalated.

As summarized in reports about the incident, Barbosa stepped outside while still on the phone with his current girlfriend. Waiting for him, authorities say, was Abel Ali Rivas, 27—Gomez’s former partner. What began as a brief confrontation quickly turned violent.
Barbosa’s girlfriend, who remained on the phone during the encounter, later told investigators she heard him ask a chilling question: “Are you going to stab me over this?” Moments later, the call abruptly ended.
Police say Rivas then allegedly attacked Barbosa, stabbing him multiple times in the abdomen and arms. At the same time, Gomez is accused of physically restraining Barbosa—pinning him against a vehicle—preventing him from escaping the assault.
The motive, according to investigators, may have stemmed from personal tensions. Authorities say Gomez accused Barbosa of getting his current girlfriend pregnant shortly before the attack and allegedly encouraged Rivas to act.
The violence didn’t end there.
After the stabbing, police say Rivas fled the scene in Barbosa’s own vehicle, which had been left running in the parking lot. Gomez reportedly remained briefly, continuing to confront Barbosa verbally before leaving as well.
Despite the severity of the attack, Barbosa survived. He was transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was later able to identify both Gomez and Rivas as the individuals involved.
The aftermath has led to multiple arrests.

Gomez was taken into custody days after the incident and later released on bond. Rivas was arrested more recently and remains in custody, facing charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, along with an additional drug-related charge.
The case has drawn attention not only for its violence but also for the alleged level of planning involved. What began as a routine child custody exchange—typically a structured and predictable process—was, according to police, manipulated into a dangerous confrontation.
For many, the incident highlights how quickly domestic disputes can escalate, particularly when emotions run high and multiple parties become involved. It also raises concerns about safety during custody exchanges, which are often designed to prioritize the well-being of children but can sometimes become flashpoints for conflict.
As the legal process moves forward, both suspects will face serious charges that could carry significant consequences if convicted.
Meanwhile, Barbosa continues to recover from his injuries—an outcome that, given the circumstances, could have been far worse.
