A young woman just moments from reaching home was killed in a violent crash that police say was caused by a fleeing suspect in a stolen truck—an incident that has left a Nashville community shaken and searching for answers.
Authorities say Oluwalayomi Fadero, 23, was driving along a familiar route when her life was suddenly cut short. According to details reported in coverage of the case, she was turning toward her neighborhood when a stolen Ford F-250 pickup truck barreled into her vehicle, triggering a devastating collision.
The man accused in the crash, Ray Eugene Padgett, 52, now faces multiple serious charges, including vehicular homicide, criminally negligent homicide, and reckless endangerment.
Police say the sequence of events began earlier that day when Padgett allegedly stole the pickup truck from a car lotin Nashville. The vehicle’s owner reportedly tracked him down and attempted to intervene—but investigators say Padgett reversed into the owner’s vehicle and fled, escalating the situation further.
Moments later, authorities say Padgett encountered an unmarked police SUV driven by a plainclothes detective. According to police, he rammed that vehicle as well, leading to additional charges. Despite this, the suspect continued driving at high speeds, reportedly reaching up to 80 miles per hour.
A police helicopter was deployed to follow the truck as it sped through busy roadways.
Then, just minutes later, tragedy struck.
Investigators say Padgett was driving on the wrong side of the road when he collided with Fadero’s sedan. The impact was so severe that both vehicles were sent roughly 100 yards into a ditch, leaving catastrophic damage in its wake.
Fadero did not survive.
