One year after a birthday trip in Hawaii allegedly turned into a fight for her life, Arielle Konig returned to that moment in a courtroom—this time as the key witness against her husband.

Arielle Konig, 37, took the stand Tuesday to testify in the attempted murder trial of her husband, Gerhardt Konig, who is accused of trying to kill her during a hike on Oahu on March 24, 2025. The testimony came exactly one year after the alleged attack.

Speaking before a jury, Arielle calmly recounted a series of events that began as a scenic outing and ended, she says, in a violent struggle near the edge of a cliff.

According to her testimony, the couple had been hiking along a steep trail when she became uncomfortable with the elevation and refused to climb further. Despite her unease, she agreed to take a photo with her husband near the edge before asking him to step aside so she could move back to safer ground.

That’s when, she told the court, the situation changed.

As she approached him, Arielle testified that Gerhardt grabbed her arms and began speaking in an agitated and aggressive tone. “I’m so f—ing done with this s—,” he allegedly said, before telling her to “get back over there” toward the cliff.

She said he then got on top of her and began trying to pull her closer to the edge.

During the struggle, Arielle told jurors she saw a syringe in his hand and heard him say, “Hold still.” She described fighting back as he attempted to restrain her, at one point digging through his backpack while pinning her down.

“He said, ‘F— you, you’re done,’” she testified. “‘I’m so sick of your s—.’”

Arielle said she tried to reason with him, bringing up their children in an effort to stop the attack.

“Our kids will be orphans,” she recalled telling him. “You’ll go to jail and I’ll be dead. Our kids need us.”

For a moment, she said, he appeared to hesitate. But the pause was brief.

According to her testimony, Gerhardt then began striking her with rocks.

The attack only stopped when two hikers nearby heard her screams and intervened by calling 911. Arielle credited those strangers with saving her life.

“They heard me,” she said. “That’s why I’m here.”

In court, Arielle remained composed for much of her testimony, though she became visibly emotional when presented with a card Gerhardt had given her earlier that same day—before the hike that prosecutors say nearly ended her life.

Gerhardt Konig, an anesthesiologist based in Maui, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was seen taking notes as his wife testified.

The prosecution has framed the case as a calculated attempt to kill, pointing to the alleged use of a syringe and the remote location of the hike. The defense has yet to fully present its case.
