An 83-year-old man is recovering after a violent and deeply unsettling attack allegedly carried out by his own stepdaughter inside a Florida home.

Jennifer Gill, 45, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder following the stabbing, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the attack unfolded Saturday morning, leaving the elderly victim with multiple injuries, including several wounds to his head.

Deputies were called to the home around 9 a.m. after a 911 caller reported the stabbing. According to an arrest affidavit, the victim himself identified Gill as his attacker. His wife, who is also Gill’s mother, rushed him to the hospital.

Investigators say the man suffered seven cuts to the back of his head, three to his left hand, and another to his shoulder. Despite the severity of the assault, he was later listed in stable condition.

The victim’s wife told deputies she had been asleep when she heard her husband screaming. When she went to investigate, she found him “covered in blood with several wounds.” Outside, she reportedly saw Gill hosing down the victim’s cane.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

According to the affidavit, Gill’s mother told police her daughter “hates” the victim for unknown reasons but did not provide a specific explanation. Gill herself allegedly offered only vague statements, telling deputies that the victim had caused “a lot of pain to people” and that there had been “a lot of years of things building up.”

What Gill did describe, investigators say, was the attack itself.

She allegedly told deputies she sprayed soapy water into the victim’s eyes to disorient him before beginning the assault. She then “whacked him with the knife,” despite noting the blades were “very dull.” When the victim attempted to stand, she allegedly pushed him back down and continued the attack.

Gill is also accused of beating the man with his own cane after stabbing him multiple times.

Police tape off a crime scene, Saturday, July 6, 2024, on the 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Ky.

In one of the most chilling statements attributed to her, Gill allegedly expressed regret not over the attack—but over the weapon. “I know it’s not nice to say, but from doing it, I wish to God they would’ve been sharp…,” she told deputies, according to the affidavit.

She also allegedly admitted her intent. When asked what she meant by saying she “might as well just try,” Gill reportedly responded that she meant trying “to kill him.”

Family members later contradicted any implication that the victim had been abusive, describing him instead as a “sweet and quiet man” who struggled with mobility due to a bad knee.

Deputies located Gill walking nearby after the incident and took her into custody without further incident.

She is currently being held in the Marion County Jail without bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 21.
