Residents around greater Houston spent part of Saturday trying to make sense of a sudden, thunderous noise that shook neighborhoods and set off a flurry of online speculation — and one homeowner later said she discovered what may be the reason: a rock she believes fell from the sky and punched into her house.

Brenham Fire Department officials said crews were sent out after receiving calls about what sounded like an explosion near Highway 50. When responders arrived, they were unable to locate evidence of a blast, the department said.

Even without a clear source on the ground, witnesses described striking details in the sky. According to the fire department, multiple people reported seeing a “green flash fall from the sky, black smoke, and heard a loud ‘boom.’” Officials added that some accounts suggested the sound may have been tied to a “possible meteor.”

Hours after the reports spread, Sherrie James contacted FOX 26 as well as the Ponderosa Fire Department, saying an “unusual rock” had smashed into her roof. James said the impact left a sizable opening in her ceiling and continued through to her flooring.

Images James provided showed a dark, football-sized stone that appeared to have fractured from a larger piece of material. Other photos depicted debris near the spot where the rock came to rest.

The fire department told FOX 26 it believed the rock was likely connected to the suspected meteor people reported hearing in the Houston region.

Separately, the American Meteor Society logged what it described as a “fireball event” over Texas on Saturday, saying it received more than 100 reports. The organization said observers estimated the event lasted between 1.5 seconds and 7.5 seconds.
