A late-night shooting outside a Florida pharmacy has left two families grieving and a community shaken, as investigators say a violent act rooted in jealousy ended in tragedy.
Authorities in St. Johns County say a 32-year-old man is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, after allegedly opening fire in a Walgreens parking lot in Ponte Vedra Beach. The victims—46-year-old Melissa Wood and 42-year-old Jason Chatham—were rushed to nearby hospitals but did not survive.

According to details reported in coverage of the case, deputies responded to a flood of 911 calls around 10:30 p.m. on March 13, all reporting gunfire at the busy location along a coastal highway. What they discovered would quickly escalate into a major manhunt.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as Christian Barrios, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. K-9 units tracked him through nearby areas, including a golf course, but he was not apprehended until the following day in a neighboring county. Authorities say he allegedly stole a vehicle, crashed it, and then attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.
Law enforcement officials described Barrios as someone already known to the system and currently on probation at the time of the incident. During a press briefing, the local sheriff emphasized the devastating consequences, noting that significant resources were deployed while families were left mourning loved ones lost in what appears to be a deeply personal act of violence.
Investigators believe the shooting was motivated by jealousy tied to a past relationship. According to an arrest affidavit, Barrios allegedly suspected Melissa Wood of being involved with another man. Authorities say he asked his mother to drive him to the location where he believed Wood would be. She later told deputies that he abruptly exited the vehicle upon spotting Wood’s car—moments before gunfire erupted.

Family members, however, dispute the narrative of an ongoing relationship. Loved ones say any connection between Wood and the suspect had already ended. In emotional statements shared publicly, her family described her as a compassionate and generous person who was deeply devoted to those around her.
Wood’s brother said she had recently entered a new chapter in life, having just become a grandmother. She leaves behind two children, along with extended family members now grappling with the sudden loss. Her daughter spoke about wanting to carry forward her mother’s legacy, especially as she raises her own young child.
Jason Chatham, the second victim, was also remembered by loved ones as someone full of life and warmth. Tributes described him as adventurous and deeply loved, with family members expressing heartbreak over the memories they will no longer be able to share.
As the case moves through the legal system, authorities continue to piece together the full timeline of events. The charges against Barrios include additional offenses related to firearms and fleeing law enforcement.
For many, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of how quickly personal conflicts can escalate into irreversible consequences. What began as a routine evening ended in devastating loss—leaving behind grieving families, unanswered questions, and a community searching for healing.
