What began as a secret birthday celebration ended in horror on a dark Florida road, where 35-year-old nurse Linda Campitelli was found beaten and bleeding just feet from her husband’s car.

Authorities say the scene, discovered late on October 28, 2024, in Lantana, carried disturbing signs of both intimacy and violence. Campitelli’s body lay face down, with a severe head wound, bruising, and what investigators described as drag marks. Nearby, inside the car, police later uncovered what appeared to be a carefully staged birthday setup — medical sheets spread across the backseat and a sign reading, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOPE YOUR BIRTHDAY IS OUT OF THIS WORLD.”

More than a year after her death, investigators arrested 38-year-old Rene J. Perez, a man identified by friends as Campitelli’s lover. He now faces charges of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.

Phone records and recovered messages paint a picture of a relationship that had grown increasingly intimate. Authorities say the two exchanged frequent texts and photos, including in the hours leading up to the meeting. In one message, Campitelli expressed unease about the encounter. “I feel kinda weird… I don’t know what to expect,” she wrote, adding that she was nervous about what he had planned.

Perez allegedly reassured her, framing the night as a romantic gesture.

But investigators say his account later unraveled. Perez initially claimed he had canceled plans with Campitelli that evening — a statement authorities now allege conflicts with digital evidence tying him to the scene and the planned meeting.

Campitelli’s husband, unaware of the alleged affair, was asleep when deputies arrived to notify him his wife had been found dead near his vehicle.

Described by her family as a devoted mother and nurse preparing for a new chapter in her career, Campitelli’s life now sits at the center of a case marked by secrecy, betrayal, and violence.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive, but the evidence — intimate messages, a staged celebration, and a brutal end — suggests a night that veered suddenly and fatally off course.
