A routine shopping trip turned alarming when a customer discovered what appeared to be a hidden recording device inside a women’s dressing room at a Lynchburg sporting goods store — a find that has now led to a sweeping criminal investigation.
Police say 26-year-old Derek Lee Beard, an employee at the Dick’s Sporting Goods on Candlers Mountain Road, has been arrested and charged with multiple serious felonies, including production and possession of child pornography, unlawful filming, and using a computer to commit sexual crimes involving minors.
Officers were called to the store on March 14 after the device was reported. Working alongside store management — who authorities say have been fully cooperative — investigators quickly identified Beard as the primary suspect.
What detectives uncovered next raised even deeper concerns.
According to police, evidence suggests the alleged activity may not have been isolated, but instead could have been ongoing for several months. Authorities are now working to determine how many individuals may have been recorded without their knowledge.
Investigators are urging anyone who used the store’s changing rooms on March 13 or March 14 to come forward as they attempt to identify potential victims.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting fears about privacy in spaces assumed to be safe and secure. For many, the idea that such alleged activity could persist undetected for months is as unsettling as the charges themselves.
The investigation remains active, with police continuing to gather evidence and encouraging anyone with information to contact authorities as they work to fully understand the scope of the alleged crimes.
