By the time help finally arrived, Steffie Davies was already gone — a 32-year-old woman reduced to just 79 pounds, her body described in court as “almost skeletal,” after what prosecutors say was a prolonged, preventable decline inside her own home.

Davies was found dead on May 26, 2023, in a house in Wrexham, where she had been living under the care of her parents, Alan and Bernita Davies. What paramedics encountered triggered immediate alarm: a woman suffering from severe malnutrition, infected pressure sores, and conditions so advanced she could no longer feed or care for herself.

This week, both parents, aged 60, were sentenced to eight years in prison after admitting they caused or allowed their daughter’s death.

A postmortem revealed Davies died from sepsis linked to untreated pressure ulcers, compounded by extreme weight loss and poor nutritional status. Evidence presented in court painted a grim picture — matted hair, possible lice, fungal infections, and a bed described as “sodden.” Her joints had contracted to the point that she could not eat or drink without assistance, yet none was given.

Despite clear signs of physical and mental deterioration, no medical help was ever sought. Davies, who struggled with anxiety and had become increasingly isolated, was not known to health or social services.

In one of the case’s most haunting details, the court heard that Davies had reached out for help — asking for protein drinks — only to be met with silence. The judge described it as being “ghosted” by her own mother.

“There is no evidence you showed her love or care,” Mrs Justice Stacey said in sentencing. “As she lay in extreme pain, wasting away and dying… you simply ignored her.”

For investigators, the case remains deeply unsettling — not because of complexity, but because of its simplicity. A once healthy woman deteriorated, slowly and visibly, while the two people responsible for her welfare did nothing.

In a statement, Davies’ sister remembered her as someone with potential, a young woman who had studied animal care and once had a future. “She needed encouragement and support,” she said. “Instead she was left to fade… in the most inhumane way possible.”
