A heartbreaking case out of London is raising difficult questions after the death of an 18-day-old baby girl in what prosecutors describe as a sudden and shocking incident inside a family home.
According to court proceedings reported by The Telegraph, baby Mariam died after falling from a third-floor apartment window in Westminster—an event that unfolded in a matter of moments while her father was just steps away.
Authorities say the infant’s father was in the kitchen preparing formula early that morning when the incident occurred. Moments later, he reportedly rushed outside after realizing something was wrong, but was unable to reach his daughter before emergency services were called.
First responders arrived quickly and found the newborn on the ground below the apartment. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later died from severe injuries, including a skull fracture, officials told the court.
Mariam’s mother, 43-year-old Zahira Byjaouane, has since been charged with murder. Prosecutors allege she was responsible for throwing the infant from the window, though the case is still in its early stages and will ultimately be decided in court.

Police responding to the scene entered the apartment and found Byjaouane inside, sitting on a bed. She was initially detained on suspicion of attempted murder before the charge was upgraded following the baby’s death.
The incident has left the surrounding community shaken. Outside the apartment building, flowers and small tributes have been placed in memory of the newborn, reflecting the emotional impact of the tragedy.
During her initial court appearance, Byjaouane spoke only to confirm her identity. She is expected to return to court for a plea hearing in June, with a trial tentatively scheduled for early 2027.
While many details remain under investigation, the case has already sparked broader conversations about mental health, family support, and the pressures faced by new parents—particularly in the fragile days following childbirth.
For now, the focus remains on the loss of a life that had barely begun.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities will work to determine exactly what happened inside that apartment—but for one family, the outcome is already devastating and irreversible.
