A deeply disturbing child abuse case out of California is drawing national attention after investigators uncovered what they describe as prolonged and extreme mistreatment of an 11-year-old girl—allegedly at the hands of her own aunt and the aunt’s boyfriend.

Authorities in Stanislaus County say the case came to light when someone reported that the girl was refusing to return home, claiming she had been abused. That tip triggered an investigation that would soon reveal a pattern of alleged cruelty spanning months.

According to officials, the girl told investigators she had endured repeated physical abuse while living with her aunt, 37-year-old Priscilla Mestaz, and her boyfriend, 36-year-old Anthony Machuca. As reported in coverage of the case, detectives obtained a search warrant and discovered surveillance footage that appeared to support the child’s account.

What investigators say they found inside the home painted a troubling picture.

The child was allegedly forced to live primarily in a garage and backyard—spaces not designed for habitation. The garage reportedly lacked basic insulation, heating, or air conditioning, exposing her to extreme temperatures. Authorities say she was made to sleep there without proper bedding, even during colder months.

Prosecutors allege the abuse went far beyond neglect. The criminal complaint includes accusations of physical violence such as punching, slapping, and strangulation. Investigators also claim the girl was restrained and dragged using a dog leash—one of the most shocking allegations in the case.

In addition, authorities say she was denied adequate food, leading to signs of malnourishment, and was forced to perform exhausting physical activity under threat of further harm. Verbal abuse and threats were also reportedly part of her daily experience.

The couple now faces 27 felony and misdemeanor charges, including torture, conspiracy to commit torture, child endangerment, and assault. Officials have indicated that additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Machuca was arrested early in the investigation, while Mestaz’s arrest was delayed due to pregnancy. She was taken into custody shortly after giving birth. Both are currently being held on $1 million bonds.

Meanwhile, other children in the home—including a newborn and a 4-year-old—have been placed into protective custody. Authorities have not released further details about the current condition or placement of the 11-year-old victim.

The case has sparked outrage and renewed concern about how such alleged abuse could go undetected for so long. As the legal process unfolds, prosecutors are expected to rely heavily on both the child’s testimony and the evidence collected inside the home.

For many, the details are difficult to process—but they also underscore the importance of speaking up. In this case, one report may have changed the course of a child’s life.
