A South Carolina couple is facing serious charges after the death of their two-month-old infant was ruled a homicide, according to authorities in Pickens County.

Deputies with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office say Joshua Kyle Smith and Courtney Finch Smith were arrested following an investigation into the death of their baby daughter, Cecilia Smith. Both parents have been charged with homicide by child abuse and are currently being held at the Pickens County Detention Center. Officials confirmed that a judge denied bond for both suspects.

According to local reporting cited by FOX Carolina, deputies and emergency responders were called to a home on Bonanza Lane around 1:11 a.m. after reports of an unresponsive infant. When first responders arrived, they immediately began life-saving efforts in an attempt to revive the child. Despite those efforts, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Because of the circumstances surrounding the death, investigators quickly launched a multi-agency investigation. The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit joined forces with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Department of Child Fatalities and the Pickens County Coroner’s Office to determine exactly what had happened.

Authorities later confirmed that the infant’s death was not accidental. The coroner ruled that Cecilia Smith died from blunt force trauma, and the case was officially classified as a homicide.

The ruling led investigators to file charges against both parents. Officials have not released additional details about what may have happened inside the home prior to the emergency call or what specific evidence led to the arrests.

Cases involving the death of a young child are among the most complex investigations law enforcement handles, often involving forensic evidence, medical analysis and detailed interviews with those closest to the victim.

For now, both Joshua Kyle Smith and Courtney Finch Smith remain behind bars without bond as the case moves forward through the legal system.

Authorities have not yet announced future court dates or whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, investigators say they remain focused on gathering all available evidence in order to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the infant.
