A frightening incident at a Florida middle school has led to the arrest of two parents after their daughter reportedly overdosed on fentanyl she found inside her home.
According to reports from local outlet WWSB and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to LA Ainger Middle School in Sarasota County on Tuesday morning after a student was discovered unconscious on the floor of a classroom.
School staff immediately sprang into action. A school nurse began performing CPR while a responding deputy administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. The quick response is believed to have saved the girl’s life. She was later transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Investigators say the teen later explained how she came into contact with the dangerous substance. According to deputies, the girl told authorities she had previously seen her father using drugs and became curious. While at home, she allegedly discovered a bottle labeled “FENT” sitting near the bathroom sink.
Officials say she took the bottle with her to school. Inside a school bathroom, the girl reportedly placed a small amount of the substance on her finger and then on her tongue. After that moment, she told deputies she remembered very little until waking up inside an ambulance.

Authorities say the girl’s parents, identified as Courtney Marie Delaney and Joshua Sanders, were later questioned by deputies. During the investigation, Sanders reportedly admitted that he had left the bottle of fentanyl accessible in the bathroom.
Delaney also told investigators she had previously argued with Sanders about his drug use, according to deputies.
Following the investigation, both parents were arrested and now face multiple charges. Authorities say Delaney and Sanders have each been charged with one count of child neglect resulting in great bodily harm as well as two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
The case highlights the growing dangers posed by fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that has contributed to rising overdose rates nationwide. Even tiny amounts of the drug can be life-threatening, particularly for children.
Officials have not released an update on the teen’s current condition but confirmed she survived the overdose thanks to the rapid response from school staff and first responders. The case remains under investigation.
